PATNA: A local court in the eastern Indian state of Bihar has handed out various jail sentences to 20 people for parading naked a middle-aged woman on the streets in the aftermath of murder of a youth.
The local Ara civil court in Bhojpur district on Friday awarded seven-year jail to five persons and two year-jail term to 15 other persons convicted for the crime. The court also imposed monetary fines on all the convicts.
The shocking incident had taken place at Bihiya town in Bhojpur district in August this year when a mob went berserk after the murder of a local youth.
Angry mob later assaulted the woman and paraded her naked through the streets shortly after a youth’s body was found from along a railway track.
Police said the mob lost its cool soon after spotting the body of the youth on a railway track and torched many shops and houses.

Subsequently, they entered the red light areas and assaulted the sex workers before dragging one of them out and striping her naked.
“The woman was paraded naked on the streets by the mob on the suspicion that she was involved in the murder of the youth,” was how the police had told the media at that time.
