PATNA: Altogether 3,405 grooms were kidnapped for forced marriage, more popular as “Pakadua Vivah”, in Bihar last year, an official report said today.
As per the report, 3070 youths were kidnapped for marriage in 2016 while in 2015, a total of 3,000 kidnappings took place with that purpose.
In 2014, the number of youths kidnapped for marriage was 2,526, the report added.
Alarmed at the increasing number of marriage-related kidnapping, the state administration has issued alert in wedding seasons which is to start soon.
Reports said on an average nine kidnappings are taking place every day for marriage, indicating the gravity of the situation.
Many say such cases of kidnappings are taking place owing to dowry demands by the groom families.
The incident hit the headlines last month again when an engineer employed with a government firm in Jharkhand was abducted and forced to marry at gun point.
The bride family didn’t show any mercy even when the groom went on crying all through the wedding rituals which lasted for hours. The wedding took place in the Mokama region of Patna district.
