80% Bihar students enrolled in govt schools don’t know addition and subtraction- Report

PATNA: The Status of Education Report (ASER) has presented a very horrible picture of the existing academic standard in the government-run schools in Bihar.

As per the report released on Wednesday, the students enrolled in government schools are quite poor in at least three subjects—mathematics, English and Hindi—the last ironically being their mother tongue.

Report states that around 80 percent Class three students enrolled in these schools don’t know the basic maths skills—addition and subtraction while the percentage of Class five students lacking this skill is 71. However, only 39 percent Class eight students know the basic arithmetic skills.

The report states that the students are also poor in English saying only 43 percent Class eight students can spell out simple English words while 44 percent of them can’t even read the full English sentences.

Same is the case with 48 percent students from Class seven, 51 percent students from Class six, 49 percent students of Class five and 52 percent students of Class four, says the report.

The report says the reading skills of these students too are not up to the mark and many can’t even read correctly the Hindi words.
