PATNA: An official in Bihar stopped a wedding after a teenaged girl sent him an emotional letter, seeking his immediate intervention.
The senior most official from Gaya district after Resham Kumari (15), a Grade 11 student, sent him a letter for his immediate intervention.
The girl’s parents had fixed her marriage with a local boy Pawan Kumar but she was totally against this marriage.
Initially, she requested her parents to defer the marriage but as they refused to budge from their stand, she finally wrote to the district magistrate Abhishek Kumar Singh.
“I want to study more but my parents are hell-bent on solemnizing my marriage. They also beat me up when I opposed this marriage,” the local media quoted mentioning this in her letter.
The official got the letter on Wednesday and the very next day, on Friday, he reached Balkhora village which falls under Guraru block in the district as per the address mentioned in the letter.
Witnesses said on reaching the village, the official first praised the girl for opposing the child marriage and warned her parents of legal action if they went against her wishes.
“This is not a family matter, rather it’s a social issue which has its bearing on the entire society,” the district magistrate told girl’s parents.
