PATNA: A newly-wed bride in Bihar quietly walked away from the marriage venue and ended her life just after wedding was over following some disputes over dowry.
The bizarre incident took place at Gondapur Chaudhary Nagar locality of Nawada district, some 123 km south of Patna, on Thursday night, sending shock waves in the areas.
The wedding of Priyanka Kumari had been fixed with Krishna Kumar Sudhakar. On Thursday, a wedding procession reached to the house of the girl, as per the scheduled programme and the visiting guests were accorded warm welcome by the bride side.
The prevailing atmosphere of happiness soon turned gloomy after the groom side demanded Rs One million cash and a luxury car as dowry right during the time of wedding. However, the bride family refused to oblige, citing their poor financial condition leading to obstruction in marriage rituals for some time.
Although the wedding rituals resumed after some time following intervention from village elders but the bonhomie looked missing. The incident extremely shocked the bride who appeared under tension all through the wedding rituals went on.
Witnesses said soon after the wedding rituals came to an end, the bride walked away from the wedding venue citing some urgency, locked herself in a room and then committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan.
The family members launched extensive searches for her when she didn’t return for long. Finally when, they broke open the locked room they were stunned to find her hanging from the ceiling fan.
Soon after the incident, the angry members held the groom side hostage and later registered a case against the in-laws. Police have recovered the body and begun investigation into the case.
The incident comes amid the Bihar state government launching a massive campaign against dowry across the state. Earlier this year, the state government had formed a human chain against dowry to make people aware about the prevalent social evil.
