PATNA: A seven-member Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team on Tuesday extensively grilled Bihar’s former deputy chief minister Tejashwi Yadav, son of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad, even as his family has been busy making preparation for the marriage of elder son Tej Pratap Yadav, local media reported tdoay.
The interrogation took place in the absence of Prasad who is serving jail term in fodder scam and is seriously ill.
The CBI sleuths grilled Tejashwi in connection with the land-for-railway hotel scam registered against him and his parents last year. Nine months after the case was registered against them, India’s premier investigating agency, however, it is yet to file charge-sheet in the case, reports said.
Call it a coincidence, the quizzing took place on a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Bihar on Tuesday to address a function to mark the concluding ceremony of the Champaran Satyagrah’s centenary celebration in Motihari, headquarters of east Champaran district.
Mahatma Gandhi launched the Champaran Satyagrah on April 10, 1917, against the British to fight for rights of farmers who were forced to undertake indigo cultivation.
“This can’t me mere coincidence that the CBI raided Lalu Prasad’s home while the PM was in Bihar. It appears the PM carried the CBI team with him,” RJD vice-president Shivanand Tiwari told the media while strongly condemning the incident.
He added the CBI failed to file charge-sheet against Tejashwi in the past nine months since there was no evidence against him and his family.
It is really strange, Tiwari added, that the CBI raided Lalu Prasad’s home while his family is busy in making marriage preparations. Prasad’s elder son Tej Pratap is scheduled to be engaged to Aishwarya Rai, granddaughter of Bihar former chief minister, later this month for which invitations are being extended to guests.
“The NDA government is using CBI to implicate the rising star in false case and block his way to the Bihar throne which is a certainty now,” Tiwari alleged. He added the entire NDA, especially chief minister Nitish Kumar is restless over the growing popularity of Tejashwi.
The RJD’s ally Congress party also slammed the move and described it as a part of a larger conspiracy. He alleged is raids were being done to weaken the opposition unity.
The ruling Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) defended the CBI action during Modi’s visit. “This could be only sheer coincidence. It has nothing to do with PM’s visit,” BJP parliamentarian DR CP Thakur said.
The CBI has registered a case against them in July last year in connection with gross irregularities in awarding tenders for maintenance of railway hotels.
They have also been charged by the CBI with getting three acres of land plot from the hoteliers in lieu of giving favour to them in awarding tenders. According to the CBI, the three acres-land lot which valued at Rs 320 million was given for mere Rs 5.4 million to RJD chief family.
