PATNA: In a rare display of anger against their seniors, hundreds of cops went on the rampage in Bihar shortly after a constable died of dengue.
The cops alleged the victim, identified as Savita Pathak, was denied leave for her proper medical treatment, leading o her death.
Angry cops, including female ones, took to streets and damaged around a dozen police vehicles by attacking them with bamboo sticks.
The mob also beat up some three senior police officers and ransacked their official residences. A sergeant major was seriously injured in the attacks and had to be admitted to a hospital, media reports said. They also chased seniors when they went near to pacify them.
TV grabs showed the angry female cops hitting the police vehicles with bamboo sticks, protesting on the streets and shouting slogans like “murdabad” (Down, down).
They complained that they were exploited in the name of duty for hours without even being provided basic facilities.
“We do duty without food, water and toilet facility. It is impossible to get leave for genuine reasons,” they said.
The chief while taking the matter seriously has sought a detailed report from the police department. Authorities said zonal IG, Patna has been asked to investigate the case.
“The incident is very serious. It highlights the trust deficit between the seniors and juniors,” Patna’s additional director general of police SK Singhal told the media on Friday.
