Despite SC ruling, Bihar villager gives ‘triple talaq’ to his wife but she ends life

PATNA: A month after the Supreme Court struck down the controversial Islamic practice of instant divorce, a man in Bihar served “triple talaq” to his wife on Thursday, prompting the victim to end her life soon.

The shocking incident took place at Dhaboul village under Pranpur police station in Katihar district.

Julekha Khatoon and Sheikh Shehjan hailed from the same village and were known to each other. Eventually, they tied the wedding knot last year.

But soon after their marriage, trouble crept into their life and they remained most of the time involved in bitter quarrels.

Their quarrel reached the climax on Thursday when Shehjan handed over instant divorce to his wife.

Reports said Julekha was so shocked after hearing “Triple Talaq” that she instantly reached her parents’ home, locked herself in a room and committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan.

The incident comes exactly a month after India’s top court by a majority verdict ruled that the Islamic practice of instant divorce through triple talaq is “illegal and unconstitutional”.

The panel of five judges had representation from different faiths – Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Sikhism and Zoroastrianism.

The five-judge bench comprised Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, Justice Kurian Joseph, Justice Rohinton Fali Nariman, Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and Justice S Abdul Nazeer.
