PATNA: They had the lone wish—to stay together. And, much to everyone’s surprise, death too could not separate them either!
Sounds weird but an old couple was cremated at the same funeral pyre after they died around the same time in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand on Monday, drawing huge crowds of villagers who wanted to have a glimpse of the couple.
Dinesh Prasad Verma, 78, who retired as the office superintendent of the Patna Medical College and Hospital was staying with wife Urmila Devi, 77, a retired school headmistress of a girls’ school, in Ranchi.
The couple who had a joyful married life spread over 58 years was madly in love with each other and wanted to depart for the heavenly abode together too. The fear of separation always tormented them.
A couple of days back, Urmila Devi suddenly fell sick after which she was admitted to a private hospital for treatment but the speed of her recovery was slow.
Late on Sunday night, she breathed her last. The very next day, her body was taken to a local cremation site for completing her last rites.
However, hardly had her husband completed the cremation rituals, he could not bear the pangs of separation and collapsed on the grounds. He was instantly rushed to a local hospital but the doctors pronounced him having “brought dead”.
Subsequently, the couple was created at the same funeral pyre as crowds of villagers gathered to watch their last rites, witnesses said.
