PATNA: A family in Bihar conducted the last rites of their alive daughter after she eloped with her boyfriend and then married him against their wishes. Last rites are performed only when someone has died in the family.
The bizarre incident took place at Betia town in West Champaran, some 220 km from Patna, in the weekend.
The parents took the extreme step soon after Neha Kumar eloped with her boyfriend Vishal Kumar and then entered into love marriage on July 27 very much against their wishes, thus bruising their pride in the society.
The family is in the public life with girl’s mother Mamata Devi earlier getting elected as ward councilor.
“What’s the use of a daughter who can’t save the dignity, pride and reputation of their parents?” girl’s father Arun Kumar Thakur asked the local media on Monday adding, “She has already made a departure from our home”.
“There is no regret for performing her last rites. She is no more for us,” he added.
What’s distressing for the couple, the boy’s family too has exiled them as they find it hard to get a shelter. Finding the going tough, the absconding couple has now approached the local police to intervene into the matter.
“They have said their parents have refused to accept them. We are trying to convince the both sides to change their stands so that the life the newly-wed couple could not get destroyed,” the local district superintendent of police Jayant Kant told the media today.
