The victim, a 40-year-old tribal widow hailing from Narayanpur Soso village in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand state, was gang-raped in March last after which she conceived and delivered baby recently only to be kidnapped by the accused persons later. The victim who lost her husband four years back somehow runs her family of four by working as a daily wage labourer.

As per the report, the victim was asleep in her hut outside the village on the fateful night when two youths barged into her home, overpowered her and raped one by one.

They gagged her when she tried to shout for help and then also assaulted her when she protested. She had her house located outside the village as she had been ostracized from the society for being a widow, she told the media.

According o the victim, both the accused reached her in the morning again and threatened to kill her if she reported the incident to anyone. They, however, promised to give her food. Eventually she remained silent as she was worried about the fate of her three children—a 12-year-old daughter and two little sons.

Her real nightmares began when she conceived later and her pregnancy began showing up after which the local villagers pointed fingers at her character and branded her “characterless”.

“While I was in the advanced stage of pregnancy, the accused came to me again and asked me to give birth to the baby. But within a week after I delivered the baby girl, they came back and took away my child saying nothing,” the victim told the media on Friday. However, this time again she didn’t report the case to the local police out of fear of attacks on her life by the accused persons.

The police came to know about the entire story after the local media reported the matter. “We have come to know about the incident and are gathering all the details. The accused persons will be arrested soon,” the local deputy superintendent of police Chandra Shekhar told the media on Friday.

The local rights body too has begun investigation into the case. “We are conducting our own investigation into the incident of rape and missing child,” chairperson of Jharkhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights said. She added the police had gathered vital clues into the matter and the accused persons would be caught soon.
