PATNA: Large crowds are being seen before every shop in Bihar as people stepped out of their homes to do Diwali shopping on Dhanteras, marking the beginning of five-day Diwali celebrations.
However, huge rush are being seen at the shops selling utensils, ornaments and statues of deities, Laxami and Ganesha.
Designer earthen lamps, candles and buntings are also selling like hot cakes.
It is considered auspicious to buy kitchen utensils and especially, gold on Dhanteras.
People are making beelines to buy ornaments and jewelries. Quite many shops have given attractive offers to attract the customers.
Quite many people have preferred to buy electronic gadgets and automobiles this year as is evident from mad rush before these shops.
Traders expect a total business of around Rs 1,365 crores this. Last year, total business was recorded at Rs 1,260 crore during Dhanteras.
The growing inclination of the masses towards Online shopping, though, has been slowly disturbing the markets.
“Although the demand for smart phones has grown significantly in recent times but we expect a dip in sales up to 20 percent owing to people’s preference for online shopping,” All India Mobile Dealers Association’s general secretary Sujit Kumar said.
The traders are also expecting dullness in car market owing to increase in road tax. “In order to save taxes, the people are buying cars from neighbouring states, such as Jharkhand which has disappointed us,” said an automobile trader.
According to him, last year some 3,000 cars were sold but this time, they are expecting a sale of about 2,500 cars.
