Spell out ‘Osama’, and instantly comes before us the image of a bearded man called ‘Osama bin Laden’—founder of ‘al Qaida’, a dreaded terrorist organization which claimed responsibility for September 11 attacks on the United States.
Osama, the name which itself creates panic, is credited with launching numerous mass-casualty attacks worldwide until he was shot dead by US Navy SEALs in Pakistan on May 2011.
But, this Osama is different—he survives on the kidney donated by a Hindu. As such, none from his family or even his community came forward to donate their kidney to this 17-year-old Muslim boy who, doctors say, is suffering from Alport syndrome—a disease that damages the tiny blood vessels in kidney.
Well, this is the story of Osama, a resident of Barabanki district in Uttar Pradesh, an eastern Indian state now more infamous for Muzaffarnagar riots or communal tension in Kairana!
According to media reports, Osama’s relatives started maintaining distance from the terminally-ill teenager admitted to the Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Science, Lucknow owing to his disease.
None came from his family to donate their kidney for the boy despite repeated requests from his parents. Even his community members ignored him.
His survival chances went thin with each passing day. It was at this time that the family of a brain dead Hindu boy Sunder came forward to donate his kidney.
“A kidney given by a Hindu will clean the blood of a Muslim from today. Now what does hardliners have to say about this?” Professor Narayan Prasad was quoted as saying in the Hindustan Times today. Prasad has been treating Osama for the past five years.
Sunder’s brother was even more ecstatic. “I am happy to see him (Osama) recovering and getting better. When a Muslim body can accept a Hindu kidney, then we can accept each other and live in harmony for ever”, he told the HT.
