JD-U legislator says government ‘helpless’ before land mafias, resigns

PATNA: A senior JD-U legislator has resigned from his party alleging his government was “helpless” before the criminals.

Shyam Bahadur Singh who represents Barharia seat in Siwan district tendered his resignation on Sunday in protest.

Reports quoting local media said the legislator visited the residence of state JD-U president Vashishtah Narayan Singh yesterday and left his resignation letter there when he found the former not available there.

“There is a moribund sugar mill in my constituency. The land on which it is situated was being encroached upon by mafia elements. When locals protested the administration lodged cases against nearly 200 of them. Our party is in power. How can I show my face to the people of my constituency in such a situation?”Singh was quoted as saying by news agency PTI on Monday.

The state JD-U president said he would not accept the resignation of his legislator and promised to look into his grievances.
