Poor Bihar villager robs money to pay school fees of ‘talented’ daughter

PATNA: Police in Bihar have arrested a man who turned to crime to earn enough money in a bid to pay the school fees of his daughter whom he wanted to become an officer after getting education.

His 12-year-old daughter is currently enrolled in a prestigious convent school in Patna.

Ram Kishore Singh who was among four persons arrested on Saturday for a robbery case in Bihar’s Vaishali district told the police how his dream to make his daughter an “officer” forced him to join the world of crime so that he could pay the mounting school fees of his daughter. According to him, he joined the world of crime six months ago.

“Sir, I got my daughter admitted to a premier English-medium school in Patna but was unable to pay the school fees on time owing to my poor background. The school administration would threaten to throw her out from the school for not paying the school fees. Ultimately I turned to crime,” the local district superintendent of police MS Dhillon quoted the accused as saying on Saturday.

According to him, the school administration had been mentally harassing his daughter for not paying the school fees on time while he was literally unable to pay them.

“Subsequently, my daughter began living under tension and it appeared she will have to quit the school but I didn’t want she quit the study midway. I had no option either,” the accused told his interrogators.

Police said the accused worked as a private security guard in Mumbai earlier but the monthly payment of Rs6,000 he got in return was not enough to meet his family needs and also the academic requirements of his daughter.

“He told us his daughter is very sharp in study and in no circumstances he wanted his daughter to quit study midway owing to financial crisis,” police official said.

According to the accused, his wish to impart proper education to his daughter and get the white collar job for her was spurred by a television serial “Afsar Bitiya” (Officer Daughter), an Indian soap opera broadcast on Zee TV. It is the story of a girl called Krishna who rises from modest beginnings to a successful career.
