Patna, India: An Indian lawmaker from opposition party had a providential escape after gangsters opened fire at him from a close range.
The incident took place in Begusari district in the eastern Indian state of Bihar on Friday evening.
Police said Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) lawmaker Upendra Paswan who represents Bakhari seat in Bihar state assembly was holding meeting with party leaders outside his home when the motorcycle-borne criminals opened fire at him.
Although the lawmaker escaped unhurt, the bullets hit some villagers sitting by his side. Soon after opening fire, the criminals fled the scene.
Bihar opposition leader Tejashwi Yadav hit out at the ruling Nitish Kumar government in Bihar over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state.
“It seems the chief minister is not satisfied after robbing the people’s mandate and is now targetting our legislators,” Tejashwi tweeted.
