Rape in ICU, bus, train and schools: What does this trend indicate?

0 12

PATNA: This has happened once again but what’s distressing here is that it took place in the ICU. Perhaps never before a patient was raped in the ICU, the area considered a very “safe” place for the patients! According to media reports, a 22-year-old woman was allegedly raped in the ICU of a private hospital in the Jhajjar district of Haryana on the night of February 13.

The woman, identified as the wife of a policeman, had been shifted to the ICU after a caesarean delivery at around 1 AM. At around 3.20 AM, a man dressed in doctor’s attire entered into the ICU and allegedly raped her. Reports said the accused was caught on CCTV camera installed at the hospital but managed to escape. The police have registered a case and are conducting raids to nab the absconding accused.

However, this is not the first time that such “unusual” incidents have shocked the nation. In December 2012, a 23-year-old female physiotherapy intern was gang-raped in a running private bus in Munirka area of Delhi and thrown out of the bus with her boy friend. Thirteen days after the brutal sexual assault, she was shifted to a hospital in Singapore for emergency treatment but died of grievous injuries two days later, generating nation-wide shocks and triggering wide protests.

Quite in similar fashion, a 30-year-old woman was allegedly gang-raped by two dreaded gangsters in a private nursing home in Bihar in October 2014. The horrendous incident had taken place in the City Hospital located in the heart of the state capital. The victim employed as maidservant in the hospital, according to the police, was busy attending patients at night when two criminals caught her at pistol-point and dragged to the operation theatre (OT) in a bid to rape her. After noticing the CCTV cameras installed in the OT, the gangsters, later, took her to other room of the hospital and gang-raped her. Acting fast, the police later arrested the main accused in the case.

In another such disgraceful incident, a standard One girl student was raped by the school principal in his official chamber during the lunch break time. The incident took place at a private school located at Kanhauli village under Bihta police station in Patna district in August 2014. The victim who hailed from the Dalit community had gone near the principal’s office to drink water after finishing her lunch when the principal called her in his office on the pretext of making her know how to operate a computer. However, moments after she was inside, the principal closed the door from inside and got into the lecherous act.

The incident came to light when the brother of the victim who was studying in the same school began looking for her sister in the principal’s room after not finding her in the playfield during the lunch break. After finding it locked from inside he smelt a rat and peeped inside the office from a small hole in the window. However, what he saw inside left him shell-shocked. At once he rushed towards his home located nearby to inform his parents. But by the time they could reach the school, the accused had fled the scene, leaving the girl lying unconscious on the ground and bleeding profusely.

Likewise, a woman passenger was allegedly gang-raped in a running Moghulsarai-Buxur passenger train in Bihar in August 2014. As reported in the media, the 37 year-old woman from Haldwani in Uttrakhand had boarded the train at Moghulsarai station in the evening to reach Patna. Finding her alone in the boggy, some ruffians set an evil eyes on her and allegedly gang-raped her before sneaking into other bogies.

The incident came to light after the woman alighted from the train when it reached Chausa station in Buxur district during late night and informed the station master who in turn conveyed the matter to the local Government Railway Police. The general refrain now is what does this trend indicate—collapse in the system or the perversion of mind?
