PATNA: The non-governmental organizations (NGOs) claiming to be working for destitute children and women in Bihar appear to have converted into centers of “sexual abuse”.
In the past over a month, the police have arrested the heads of at least three NGOs for sexual abuse of girl inmates lodged in shelter homes being run by them.
In a latest incident, the Patna police have arrested Baban Yadav, a BJP leader who was running an NGO, namely Buddha Society Seva Foundation in the heart of the state capital for allegedly sexually exploiting the NGO secretary.
The arrest followed soon after the victim registered a complaint with the local police, charging her boss with “sexually abusing” her for the past one year. The BJP leadership while acting quickly has dismissed the accused leader form the party.
Earlier this week, the Patna police arrested another two NGO officials for alleged “sexual abuse” and mysterious death of two inmates lodged at a shelter home running in Rajiv Nagar locality of the state capital.
The arrested accused who included Manisha Dayal, treasurer and Chirantan Kumar, secretary of the Anumaya Human Research Foundation, NGO, was running the shelter homes for girls. There were some 75 girls lodged at this shelter home.
The horror tales came out soon after two inmates died under mysterious circumstances at this shelter home in the weekend after which the NGO officials allegedly tried to hush up the case.
A further investigation into the deaths of inmates later brought to fore horrible tales of alleged sexual tortures at the shelter home.
“The girls inmates lodged at the shelter home were being routinely molested but the NGO official didn’t take notice of our complaints.
Instead, we were badly assaulted and denied food whenever we complained about this,” a girl inmate from Gopalganj district has said in her statement to the court of sub-divisional judicial magistrate, Patna.
Local residents have also told the police how they often saw luxury vehicles parked outside the shelter homes during late hours and taking the girls away.
Likewise, the police have arrested Brajesh Thakur, head of “Seva Sankalp and Vikas Samiti” which was running a shelter home for girls in Muzaffarpur town of Bihar.
A medical test has conducted rape of as many as 34 girl inmates at this government-funded shelter home now being investigated by the CBI. An initial investigation into the case has prima facie found involvement of many political bigwigs in the sex scandal.
The revelation of the scandal has led to resignation of social welfare minister Manju Verma while the opposition has been seeking for resignation of more ministers, including chief minister Nitish Kumar.
The alleged sex scandal running at the government-funded shelter homes being run by the NGOs came to light following their social audit by Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) which submitted its report in May this year.
