PATNA: A speeding car ran over a group of school children returning home after school hours in Bihar on Saturday, killing nine of them on the spot and injuring around 20 others.
Police said the children who were admitted to a government middle school in Muzaffarpur district were returning homes in groups after closure of school when a speeding Bolero car ran over them, leaving them in a poll of blood.
The victims were hurriedly rushed to a local government hospital but nine of them could not be saved.
The condition of four other children admitted to the hospital is stated to be very critical, hospital authorities said.
Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar announced a compensation of Rs4 lakh to each victim family and tough action against the accused.
The accused driver is absconding after the incident while the car has been confiscated, police said.
