Tata steel to impart training, employment to alms-seeking eunuchs

PATNA: There is a good news for furiously-clapping eunuchs surviving on alms. Pitying at the pathetic condition of the eunuchs, the Tata Steel Company in Jharkhand has now announced to provide them employments after imparting basic training in technical courses.

The company took a decision in this regard after conducting a survey on the condition of the eunuchs in Jamshedpur town, more popular as steel city. The survey found that around 99 percent of eunuchs are surviving on alms although many of them are well qualified for the jobs.

As per the plan, the talented eunuchs will be enrolled for site safety supervisor or rigger courses free of cost. The general candidates have to pay Rs20,000 and Rs12,000 for site safety supervisor and rigger courses, authorities said.

It all happened after a senior Tata official chanced upon to meet a group of eunuchs during a trip to the areas and was impressed to find that quite a good number of them were well educated—some had passed the graduation examinations with good marks.

Subsequently, she called a leader of the eunuch at the office and fixed her meeting with Capability Development chief at Tata Steel Prakash Singh. Soon, some eunuchs were asked to appear at a test conducted by the Tata Steel. The authorities were pleased to find that two of them had cleared the test.

“We have planned to give employment to eunuchs after imparting the free technical training,” Singh told the media today. He said although the Indian Constitution gives equal rights to them but the ground realities are entirely different.

Authorities said the selected eunuchs will be given a annual package of Rs250,000 to Rs300,000. As per a rough estimate, there are some 1,300 eunuchs in Jamshedpur town but majority of them have been surviving on beginning.
