Amritsar: In a shocking incident, a speeding train ran over a crowd of people standing on tracks to watch burning Ravana effigy near Amritsar in India’s Punjab state on Friday evening.
According to news agency PTI, at least 50 people are killed in the incident.
Sun-divisional magistrate, Amritsar, Rajesh Sharma told the PTI that 50 bodies have been found and equal number of injured persons have been admitted to the hospital.
The crowd had gathered to watch the burning of Ravana effigy which is a part of Dussehra celebrations.
The accident took place at Jodha Phatak near Amritsar.
Rescue teams have rushed to the spot and providing relief to the victims.
President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the incident.
Extremely saddened by the train accident in Amritsar. The tragedy is heart-wrenching. My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and I pray that the injured recover quickly. Have asked officials to provide immediate assistance that is required.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi also expressed shock over the heart-rending incident and conveyed his condolences to the grieving families.
