Triple talaq: What leaders from Bihar have to say over SC verdict

PATNA: The Supreme Court in a landmark judgment today said the Islamic practice of triple talaq is “unconstitutional”, bringing a wave of joy among Muslim women across the country.

Given the background, this really becomes interesting to know what the leaders from Bihar feel about the SC order:

Lalu Prasad, RJD president: “I have not studied the Supreme Court judgment but none should be happy or disappointed.”

Rabri Devi (RJD), former chief minister: “I welcome the verdict. Now the centre should come out with a legislation in the better interests of Muslim women.”

Mohammad Nematullah, RJD MLA: “The SC has asked for framing a law. If the government moves ahead in that direction, it should consult Muslim religious leaders and women leaders.”

Neeraj Kumar, JD-U spokesperson: “The party will put its view after studying the full judgment.”

Sushil Modi (BJP), Bihar Deputy CM: “This will prove a revolutionary step for India.”

Sadanand Singh, Congress leader: “The judgment will end discrimination in Muslim society and bring dignity to the Muslim women. Some 20 Muslim countries have already banned triple talaq.”

Upendra Kushwaha, RLSP leader and Union minister: “It’s a landmark judgment. In true sense, the Muslim women have attained real freedom today.”
