#TripleTalaq: Five-member all-faith bench of SC judges begins hearing in the case

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday began hearing the sensitive issue on Triple Talaq,  reports said.

The issue is being heard by a bench of five judges-Chief Justice of India J S Khehar, Justice Kurian Joseph, Justice R F Nariman, Justice UU Lalit and Justice Abdul Nazeer, all from five different faiths.

The bench is supposed to hear the lead petition “Quest for Equality vs Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind” over the period of the next few days before giving ruling on the matter.

Along with the case are six other petitions by different individuals.

CJI JS Khehar has said that the bench would not get into the issue of polygamy as it’s not related to triple talaq.

“We will also examine whether triple talaq is part of enforceable fundamental right,” the top court bench was quoted as saying in the local media today.

The apex court had on its own taken cognizance ‘triple talaq’ which is a traditional way of getting divorce from the wife by the uttering the Islamic words thrice.
