PATNA: A woman sarpanch was killed after allegedly being raped in Bihar—the latest in a series of rapes raising a big question mark over prevailing law and order situation in the state.
A sarpanch is an elected head of a village-level statutory institution of local self-government called the panchayat (village government). In some states of India such as Bihar, sarpanch has been empowered to look into various civil and criminal cases, and given judicial power to punish and impose fine on those violating rules
The incident took place in Rupauli block of Purnia district on Saturday. The police have recovered her body and sent it for postmortem.
Reports said Mobina Khatoon had gone to her field to bring fodder but was alleged raped and killed.
When she didn’t return home till late in the day, her husband rushed out looking for her, and to his shock found his wife’s half-naked body lying in a maize field.
Soon after getting information, police rushed to the spot and recovered her body. “We are investigating the case,” a local police official Dilip Ram told the media on Sunday.
