India child adoption centre officials jailed for sexual abuse of girl on US couple’s complaint
PATNA, INDIA: Police in the Indian state of Bihar have jailed the director of a child adoption centre among five persons for alleged sexual abuse of a five-year-old girl.
The said adoption centre was being run at international tourist town of Gaya in Bihar state. A Non-governmental organsation (NGO) named ECOVIC was running the centre.
The arrest followed after an American couple who had adopted the child barely 20 days back registered a complaint with the Indian authorities when the victim complained of pain in her private parts.
Reports said soon after the US couple returned home with the child on August 31 after completing all the legal formalities, the child complained of pain in her private parts. Subsequent tests conducted later found that she had been sexually abused, reports said.
Subsequently, the couple reported the matter to the authorities concerned in India. Acting on the complaint, the authorities conducted raids at the child adoption centre and arrested five officials, including the director Binod Kumar.
The arrested officials who included two women were later produced in the local court which forwarded all of them them to jail. The police have sealed the adoption centre and rescued the children lodged there. A total of 19 children were staying at the centre, media reports said.
“We had received complaint about the torture of children at the adoption centre. We have conducted medical test of all the children and awaiting reports,” Gaya’s senior superintendent of police Rajiv Mishra told the local media on Saturday.
Similar incident had been reported last year from a child care home being run at Bihar’s Muzaffarpur town where at many as 34 girls were allegedly sexually abused.
The matter is currently being investigated by India’s premier Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) under the supervision of the Supreme Court.
This child care home too was being run by an NGO namely Seva Sankalp and Vikas Samiti headed by media baron Brajesh Thakur who is now in jail.
