Muslim woman beaten up by husband after she votes for BJP in India elections
The incident took place in Jharkhand state in the weekend
A Muslim villager from the Indian state of Jharkhand beat up his wife after she voted for the Hindu nationalist Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), ignoring stern warning from her husband.
The woman identified as Sahana Khatoon is resident of Lohardaga Lok Sabha constituency where polling was held in the fourth phase on April 29.
The entire matter came to light after she revealed her voting decision to her co-villagers while returning home from the polling booth, media reports said.
Subsequently, they informed the local villagers who later conveyed the matter to her husband Kudus Ansari.
Reports said when Ansari asked her to reply as to why she disregarded his instruction, she shot back, “Meri marji…ham jisko chahen usko vote de sakte hain (its my prerogative to vote for any party. Who are you to give me instruction)?”
Her reply angered her husband who later beat her up in the presence of local villagers. The incident took place on Saturday.
A panicky woman subsequently left for her parents’ home but very soon she mustered courage and rushed to the nearby Chanho police station and filed a case against her husband.
“We have registered the case and further investigation is on,” a local police official Rajendra Rajak told the local media on Monday.
Muslims in Jharkhand account for little over 14 percent in Jharkhand which was carved out of Bihar in the year 2000.
