PATNA: Opposition parties in Bihar are questioning the “Sushasan” (rule of law) claim of NDA government after a former inspector general of police was badly assaulted by gang of bikers in Patna on Tuesday.

Ajay Kumar Verma, a 1985 batch IPS officer who took voluntary retirement last year, had gone to the Ramkrishnangar locality of Patna, the capital city of Bihar, Tuesday evening when a biker hit his car.

When he objected to his act, the biker called up some 50 friends who all assaulted Verma and his son, and fled the scene, family members alleged.

What was strange, though, was that the police didn’t show interest in his case when they informed the police about the incident.

“There is nothing like law and order situation in Bihar, it has collapsed totally. When the cops look so callous towards someone who served in the police department for long, what could be fate of the common men could very well be imagined,” Verma’s wife Shampa Verma told the media on Wednesday.

“We were at the mercy of God all through the incident. Thank god we are alive,” she said, heaving a sigh of relief.

According to the victim IPS officer Ajay Verma, he called up the traffic SP and the SSP when the miscreants attacked him but no help reached. Eventually, he called up the DGP and it was then that the police reached the spot.

Opposition parties slammed the government for failing to maintain law and order situation in Bihar and alleged the situation has deteriorated as the chief minister is overburdened.

“Home ministry should be run by a full time minister but it is under the chief minister who already is in charge of various portfolios and also heads his party, JD-U. In such a situation, the chief minister should hand over the home ministry either to someone from his  party or the BJP,” Congress leader Prem Chandra Mishra said.
