PATNA: Diabetes is spreading in an epidemic form in India but what remains alarming is that the younger generation is fast falling victims to this disease.
In India, about 50.9 million people suffer from diabetes, and this figure is likely to go up to 80 million by 2025, making it the ‘Diabetes Capital’ of the world, predicts a report of the Diabetes Foundation (India).
In an interview to The Bihar Post, Bihar’s eminent health specialist Dr Rajiva Ranjan reveals why the younger generation is getting exposed to the diabetes and what steps they must take to fight off the “silent killer”.
Dr Ranjan, a leading Patna-based consultant physician, says lack of physical exercise, little or just no physical movement and their addiction towards social media, such as Facebook and WhatsApp, have left the young generation exposed to diabetes.
According to him, the new generation can save themselves from the danger of diabetes by following just five things in life—they must control their weight, do regular physical exercises, bring change in their life style, avoid taking junk food and opt for more green vegetables.
He says apple is the best fruit to be taken regularly and suggested for saying no to ice-cream.
According to him, there are certain things which are indicative of preliminary signs of diabetes,. They include—weakness, feeling very thirsty, extreme fatigue, weight loss and blurry vision.
Finally, he had a piece for good advice for younger generation—they must find time for themselves, try their best to walk on foot and focus on physical exercise to reduce diabetes risk.
“The maximum your physical activities, the minimum the chances of diabetes attacks,” he advised the younger generation.
“What will be the ultimate fate of the nation, its economy when the youngsters in the age-group of 30-35 fall victim to diabetes?” wonders Dr Ranjan.
